On May 11, sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources and United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Center on Small Hydro Power hosted the fifth "Hydropower For Today Forum" in Hangzhou. Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech. He stressed the need to vigorously develop hydropower to improve people's wellbeing and promote sustainable economic and social development.
Chen Lei's keynote address includes three parts: First, China's achievements in the construction of small hydropower and experience; Second, China's small hydropower development ideas, objectives and measures; Third, vigorously promote the international exchange of small hydropower and cooperation.
Ge Huijun, vice governor of Zhejiang Province, Mr. Ferdinando,, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Electric Power and Energy, Sri Lanka, Mr Monger, Director of Department of Energy and Climate Change of United Nations Industrial Development Organization delivered speeches. The forum is chaired by Mr. Hu Siyi, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources.
This forum focused on the role of small hydropower to improve people's wellbeing, and displayed China's experiences and practice in rural electrification and the development of small hydropower. China¡¯s achievements in small hydropower sector such as policy guidance, standardization, cost reduction, quality management are good examples for other developing countries. This forum provides a good platform to promote the world's small hydropower development in the field of Co-operation and Development.
Over 50 foreign representatives from 26 countries such as Azerbaijan, Austria, Botswana, Cambodia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Congo, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Myanmar, Nigeria, Nepal, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia and United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Hydropower Association and other international organizations as well as 120 Chinese participants from water resources departments, small hydropower enterprises and institutions of all provinces attended the forum.
