Send Electricity to Villages

According to the statistics of 1987, at that time about 196 million people in China's rural areas were still living without electricity supply. As most of these people were living in China's poor westen areas where energy shortage is very common, they can only depend on firewood for their daily energy needs. This led to serious environmental problems, such as forest degradation, soil erosion and reduction in soil fertility and total agricultural output. It is difficult to send power to these areas through large grid, however, the clean energy generated form SHP stations provides a sound solution to these problems. The Chinese government has been working consistently on the ?ˇăSend electricity to Villages?ˇŔ Program, which by now has made great achievements. By the end of 2001, there were just seven counties of 16,509 villages, 7.06 million households of about 28 million people without electricity.

This project is still undergoing today, mandated by the Planning Committee and MWR of China, IN-SHP has taken up the task of project evaluation. Up till now, 53 stations in Tibet and 118 stations in Sichuan have been evaluated to meet the set standard.
