Small hydropower has a significant role to play in the socio-economic development in Tajikistan. The UNDP Energy and Environment Programme has launched “Technology Transfer and Market Development for Small Hydropower in Tajikistan” to accelerate small scale hydropower generation in Tajikistan by removing barriers through enabling legal and regulatory framework, capacity building and developing sustainable delivery models starting from March 2012 to December 2015. The project was officially agreed by the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan and UNDP on January 27, 2012. The project budget has been funded in collaboration between UNDP and GEF amounting to US$ 3.13 million for regions that include Khatlon, Sughd, GBAO and DDR. Expected global benefits include of avoiding 273 kilotons of CO2 emissions over the lifetime of a small hydropower plant and almost 819-4952 ktCO2 in indirect emission reductions.
