Zambian Energy Delegation Visits International Center on Small Hydropower to Forge New Chapter in China-Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation

On December 2nd, 2024, a delegation from Zambia's Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC), led by Director Mr. Davies Siandahu Chinkusu, visited the International Center on Small Hydropower (ICSHP) for in-depth discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation in renewable energy. ICSHP Director General Dr. Xu Jincai warmly received the delegation, with Deputy Director Ms. Huang Yan attending the meeting.

Mr. Xu Jincai highlighted the fruitful collaboration between both institutions, including China-Zambia renewable energy technology transfer, Zambia small hydropower and renewable energy development, and other consulting projects under the framework supported by the UNDP. The organizations have collaborated on  technical training, capacity building, personnel exchanges, and project demonstration, achieving effective results in promoting South-South and tripartite cooperation. KGRTC has developed into Africa’s most influential training institution in the field of energy and power. Mr. Xu suggested that both organizations could leverage their respective platforms to pursue in-depth cooperation in standards, technology, equipment and capacity building, while jointly demonstrating integrated source, network, load and storage technologies to enhance comprehensive cooperation in the field of renewable energy.

Expressing gratitude for ICSHP's longstanding support, Director Chinkusu affirmed KGRTC's commitment to strengthening practical cooperation in small hydropower, solar, and wind energy. "We aim to develop hydropower-based multi-energy complementary systems and accelerate training and demonstration projects for hydro, PV, and wind power," Chinkusu stated, emphasizing their shared goal of promoting clean energy development across Zambia and Africa.

The visit culminated in the signing of a cooperation memorandum, reaching consensus on establishing regional sub-centers, enhancing technology transfer, expanding training programs, and jointly exploring market opportunities. Both parties pledged to deepen project collaboration and explore multilateral partnerships to contribute to China-Africa energy cooperation and Africa's energy transition.

ICSHP's South-South Cooperation Division, Multilateral Development Division, and International Liaison Division representatives participated in the discussions.

This landmark visit represents a significant advancement in renewable energy cooperation between two institutes. As a model of South-South collaboration, the ICSHP-KGRTC partnership continues to provide sustainable energy solutions for Zambia, offering practical pathways to achieve the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
