Yuzaikou SHP registered by the CDM EB of UNFCCC

On 18th December 2005, Yuzaikou Hydropower Project has been successfully registered by the CDM Executive Board of UNFCCC, as the 51st CDM project registered globally. Yuzaikou SHP project is located in Rucheng County of Hunan Province, P.R. China. It is designed to install 2 x 7.5MW Francis turbine for power generation with regulating capacity. The Project is classified as Project Type I.D: Renewable Electricity Generation for the Grid under the Small Scale CDM Project Activity of UNFCCC. It is expected to generate 242,880 CERs up to 2012. Yuzaikou is among few SHP CDM projects developed in China up to date, compared with some Latin American countries and India, which has already SHP projects registered by the Executive Board or a dozen of SHP projects in the pipeline for registration. The ICSHP has been researching CDM projects as early as in 2002. Currently in addition to Yuzaikou, ICSHP has been working on several other SHP CDM projects in Gansu Province, Shan*xi Province and Zhejiang Province. Yuzaikou as the fastest progressing project will provide China with more experiences and lessons in developing SHP projects under Clean Development Mechanism. For more information about Yuzaikou CDM Project, please contact HU Xiaobo (Ms.) Deputy Chief of Multilateral Affairs Division at hic@mail.hz.zj.cn.

The Chamber of Representatives of Argentina has declared of national interest the Project and Construction of Small Hydropower Schemes and Refurbishing old ones

Within this context, the Argentina Nation*s Secretary of Energy is collecting relevant information of suitable sites. Province governments are willing to collaborate in this effort whose immediate objective is to publish a list of projects in Internet. The web page is
http://energia.mecon.gov.ar/inversiones/buscarproyectos.asp, and up today there are more than 132 SHP suitable locations at different design stage. In the past time, remarkable regional SHP efforts have been done, but they have lost continuity. However, the broad implementation of SHP in the continent will convey to upgrade the quality of living of poor people, replacing intermittent political welfare that maintain the people at a subsistence level by an instrument that produces energy, then, used to make goods and support services as tourism. SHP will contribute to a sustainability and progress in rural areas. Within this context, it is expected the giant financial continental Institution IADB (Interamerican Development Bank) will promote and finance SHP in South America, as
an effort towards sustainable development in the energy sector. Source: Raul P.

Energy Conservation in India, with the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency

Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) has implemented energy conservation programmes in different sectors. Under the ※Save Energy Programme§ MEDA has done a remarkable work till date as energy audit have been carried out in 384 industrial sites, which have resulted in substantial energy saving. The Govt. of Maharashtra has notified the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), as the Designated Agency to coordinate, regulate and enforce the provisions of the energy conservation. This is a significant step forward for MEDA, which is the state nodal agency for renewable energy, and now has the additional responsibility of promoting and developing energy efficiency. MEDA has entered into an agreement with international institutes for technical co-operation in the field of Demand Side Management and demonstration projects. Under this agreement, MEDA has initiated energy conservation in water supply scheme for Nashik Municipal Corporation. For more details, contact erikaimhof@inshp.org.

The Regional Power Inc. has recently received the Blue Planet Prize

The Sechelt Creek Generating Station was one of the three winners awarded with the Blue Planet Prize for the year 2005. Regional Power Inc., the developer and operator of the Sechelt Creek facility, was presented with the prize during the UNFCCC Montreal Climate Change Conference held on December 4, 2005. The Blue Planet Prize, which is awarded every two years for up to three projects, recognizes good practice in the development and operation of a hydropower scheme on the basis of environmental, technical, social and economic criteria. The Sechelt Creek Project is a 16 MW facility, which was designed, developed and built by Regional Power and began operating in 1997. All of the electricity produced by the facility is purchased by BC Hydro under a long term power purchase agreement. The facility was acquired by the Clean Power Income Fund in 2001 and continues to be operated by Regional Power under a long term operating contract.
