The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines is willing to promote renewable energy

Peru looks set to engage further in the renewable energies sector if the efforts of the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines are any indication of the countries enthusiasm. Recent years have been witness to increased eagerness to strengthen Peru¡¯s renewable energy network, as the push for Rural Electrification has intensified. Wind and Hydro power remain key to such sustainable development in Peru and these were central issues last month during a Peru based dialogue consisting of Prof. Tong of INSHP, the Presidents of ten small hydro power equipment producing companies, the Peruvian Vice Ministry of Energy and Mines and Mr. Pedro Gamio Aita. During the dialogue all parties agreed to elaborate a wind map of Peru with the World Bank for the next year and to develop the Peruvian SHP potential in the future years.

Expert mission to Cameroon, Burundi and Zambia

Although many African countries are endowed with rich energy resources for energy generation, the majority of people, especially those in rural areas still have no access to electricity. Cameroon has the second largest hydropower capacity among the African countries. However due to various barriers, only a small percentage of this potential has been developed. And 95% of its rural population remains without access to electricity. Many other countries like Burundi and Zambia are also faced with similar problems. The main obstacles of rural electrification include lack of information, know-how, technology and funds. IN-SHPhas sent experts to Africa for consultations and workshops several times since it was established. It has both established and or provided assistance to SHP stations in African countries as diverse as Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Tanzania. IN-SHP puts great emphasis on the support of African countries in this year¡¯s work as it always has previously. Recently IN-SHP decided to send experts to three Africa countries, Cameroon, Burundi, Zambia to provide technical consultation to some SHP projects from July 29 to August 10, 2006.

¡°Demonstration zone of water and energy efficiency¡± Ltd. launches its first Micro-Hydro Power Station in Kyrgyzstan

"Demonstration zone of water and energy efficiency¡± Ltd. has presented its first ¡°Baytoo¡± MHPS project in the village Saru of the Issyk-Kul Region (Eastern Kyrgyzstan). Implementation of the project has become possible within the Kyrgyz-Norway cooperation program. This program is designed for project developers and owners of small hydro power stations in remote and mountainous regions of Kyrgyzstan, including municipal service (water supply, sewage and energy supply systems), agriculture and processing industry areas.

The project was funded with the help of GEF/UNDP Small Grants Program, loans of Kyrgyz Agricultural Financial Corporation, Norwegian program and own resources of the project owner. The total cost of project was about 54 thousand USD and the consultative support in developing of the business plan, purchase of equipment and technical launch of the project was provided by the ¡°Demonstration zone of water and energy efficiency¡± Ltd.

The project consists of three aggregates which have been installed with 22 kWt power, allowing it to generate about 400-450 thousand kWh of energy per year. A special feature of this project is productive use of the generated energy. It will supply with power the greenhouse and dairy workshop. Thus the end product will be such products as plants, vegetables and dairy products rather than the energy itself, which significantly improves the economic features of the project.

Apart from economic and social benefits, this project involves an environmental aspect, which will help prevent illegal cutting of the neighboring forests and bushes; thus helping to curb desertification and land degradation processes. Mr. Sultanbekov S. U, State Secretary of the National Agency for Anti-Monopoly Policy and Development of Competition, emphasized that implementation of projects of this kind would reduce pressure over energy system of the Kyrgyz Republic through increasing efficiency and reduction of energy loss during transportation. The project provides an excellent basis for development of similar projects in future and can serve as successful practice of sustainable community development.

Update from Norway

Good news from Norway, a recent update from our members there informs us that Small hydro schemes are continuing to increase. Figures just released from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) show that during 2005; 15 new Small Hydro Power schemes larger that 1MW were commissioned and a further 20 new Mini and Micro schemes were also commissioned. The total installed capacity for the above schemes is 300,6 MW and mean annual production is expected to reach 875 GWh. In response to growing demands placed on it through increasing numbers applications the NVE is expanding its capacity to process applications. Furthermore the application procedure for mini and micro systems is being simplified in an effort to hasten the licensing process.
